On the Saturday morning, it’s a ride out for breakfast to the Bookish Cafe in Crickhowell before making our way out onto the great roads of mid-Wales for the day.

Sunday follows a similar pattern with a ride out for breakfast before making the way home.

The itinerary for the weekend is planned to include some of the highlights of the Welsh countryside:

  • Elan Valley

  • Gospel Pass

Planning for a National or Local Rally

Have you ever considered taking part in one of the various national and local rallies that are held throughout the riding year?

So, if you fancy having a go at the Welsh, Scottish or National, (or all 3 and more) why not come along to hear Graeme Hay give you some tips and tricks after his years of experience doing this both as a solo entrant and as a team member.

(A team of 3 Solent members won a Platinum for the Scottish National in 2023)

Graeme will look to cover:

  1. What it is.

  2. How to enter.

  3. How the various awards are achieved.

  4. How to plan your route, easily.

  5. How to plan your riding time, rest breaks and personal safety.

  6. To answer each and all of interested members questions.

If you would like to learn more and still have time to enter for this year’s events (the Welsh will be the first, running in May) then contact training using the button below to reserve a spot.

Group Ride - Dartmoor Dash

Please read the latest IAM Social Group Rides Guidelines before joining this ride.

Grade: Level 2. A description of the ride level can be found here.

Suitability:
This level is primarily aimed at qualified Members and those Associates who have a good understanding of Advanced Riding, have had several development sessions with their Observer and want to take the opportunity to practice their skills between observed rides. Associates must get the approval of their Observer before participating on a Level-2 ride.

Ride Leader: Graham Martin

Briefing: 09:00 Costa Coffee Tesco Extra Winnall (///directly.resemble.beaten)

Depart: 09:30

Morning stop: Haynes Motor Museum

Lunch stop: Topsham Quay

Afternoon stop: Princetown

You are cordially invited to participate in the 2024 Dartmoor Dash.

The event was started 11 years ago and has become a traditional opportunity to blow off the winter cobwebs and to start the riding season off with some great riding and pleasant company.

The weekend starts with a meet up at the Costa Coffee INSIDE the Tesco Exrtra superstore at Winnall on Saturday morning. From there we travel to Stonehenge where those who need to use the facilities can do so.

After a short break, it’s on to the Haynes Motor Museum at Sparkford for a coffee and cake stop.

We would then drop in to Topsham Quay for a lunch stop but, as the years have gone on, this has become very gentrified and expensive so the lunch stop may be at an alternative location - updates will follow when they are finalised.

After lunch it is on to Dartmoor for the afternoon taking in some great winding roads and views before descending on the various tearooms in Princetown for tea and cake.

Finally, it’s on to our lodging for the night the YHA Bellever, set in the beautiful Bellever Forest in the Dartmoor National Park, where you will be given an evening meal; as if all that drinks and cake en-route wasn't enough.

Sunday morning, we reassemble after a full breakfast and ride across the moor making our way home.

Accommodation will be based on shared rooms; there are a number of rooms from two beds up eight and accommodation will be allocated based on the mix of people attending.

The cost of the weekend is £50 per person which will cover your accommodation, evening meal and breakfast.  Payment is required as part of the registration sign-up. Refunds, in the event of a participant cancelling, will only be possible in the event that we can find another person to take the space.

Drinks with the evening meal are not covered and you are welcome to purchase these from the bar.

Please register for the ride using the link below

Note: This is a Level 2 ride and Associates who have experience of longer distance riding and group rides are welcome.

Mileage: Approximately 200 miles

Please arrive with a full tank of fuel

Garmin Basecamp Skills

If you are thinking of planning a tour with some Winter sun, or simply looking to create some routes for next year’s riding season whilst the weather is keeping the bike in the garage, but struggle with the basics of creating a .GPX file in BaseCamp, then why not come along.

This is a repeat of a session held earlier in the Summer by Dave Sutherland and is designed to help those who may be looking for some assistance in mastering the vagueries of Basecamp in terms of creating satnav routes.

This is not a session about “what is best” as there are various apps and manufacturers available. This is about creating a .gpx file in Basecamp that can be used in other compatible devices.

Participants will need to bring a laptop that has the latest version of Basecamp installed and a set of up-to-date maps. Laptops should be fully charged or have mains adaptors along with extension leads. If you wish to bring your satnav and the correct data transfer cable that’ll be fine, but not necessary.

If you are interested, use the button below to let us know you are coming.

All are welcome.
